Verification sampling is an essential tool in logistics management. It involves selecting a representative sample of products or materials to verify that they meet previously established standards of quality, quantity or specifications. This process is essential for maintaining control of the supply chain, reducing errors and ensuring that products reach the end customer in optimal condition.
Their importance lies in the fact that they make it possible to ensure the quality of the goods without having to check each product individually, which would be unfeasible in terms of time and cost. Applying sampling prevents defective or incorrect products from entering the supply chain, therefore minimizing the need to manage returns or corrections, known as reverse logistics.
Types of verification sampling methods
There are several types of sampling methods that can be applied in the logistics field, each with a specific approach depending on the objective and the characteristics of the inventory or process to be verified. These methods are used in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, veterinary, cosmetics, fine chemicals, food supplements and medical devices.
- Simple random sampling: This is one of the most commonly used and consists of randomly selecting a specific number of products from a batch for inspection. Randomization guarantees that all products have the same probability of being selected, therefore ensuring a representative sample of the total.
- Stratified sampling: This method divides the lot into different “strata” or subgroups according to specific criteria (such as size, color, supplier or manufacturing lot), and samples are selected within each subgroup.
- Systematic sampling: Products are selected at regular intervals. For example, it might involve checking every tenth product on a production line or every 15th box in a goods receiving area. This method is ideal when uniform coverage is sought without resorting to completely random selection.
- Acceptance sampling: A statistical method used to decide whether a lot is accepted or rejected, based on inspection of a sample. If the number of defective products in the sample exceeds a previously defined quality level, the entire lot is rejected.
